BIO
James is an Assistant Professor / Lecturer and Ad Astra Fellow in the School of Information and Communication Studies. Before he came to UCD he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Institute of Communication, Culture, Information and Technology at the University of Toronto Mississauga and a Postdoctoral Scholar at the eScience Institute at the University of Washington.
His research focuses on the political economy of algorithmic technologies, data and digital labour. His research draws on resources from media studies, science and technology studies and labour studies. He is author of Automation and Autonomy: Labour, Capital and Machines in the Artificial Intelligence Industry (Palgrave Macmillan, 2021), co-author of Inhuman Power: Artificial Intelligence the Future of Capitalism (Pluto, 2019) and has published in journals including Big Data & Society and New Media & Society. He holds a PhD in Media Studies from the University of Western Ontario.
