TEACHING ACTIVITIES

I have taught extensively on Victorian literature and culture, popular literature and culture, war fiction, the catastrophe genre, speculative fiction and literary theory. I recently co-ordinated the modules ‘Speculative Fiction: Gothic, Science Fiction and the Apocalypse’ and ‘War Fiction 1870-1930: Imagined Wars and the Experience of War’, and the MA module ‘Expressions of Modernity’ in 2019-20. I believe in a student-centred, learning-oriented approach to teaching in which knowledge is co-constructed between students and teacher, with the teacher acting as a facilitator of learning rather than a deliverer of content. I am committed to the research-led teaching model, viewing research and teaching as intrinsically linked, reciprocal activities. My approach involves fostering an open, inclusive class-room atmosphere and participating in efforts to widen the curriculum to include a more diverse range of voices. I undertook a Professional Special Purpose Certificate in Academic Practice, level 9 professional certificate for teaching and learning in higher education, at Trinity College Dublin in 2018.
