BIO

Akke is an epidemiologist with a focus on infections and antibiotics. She holds a HRB Research Leader Award to set up the CARA network (caranetwork.ie), Collaboration to reduce Antimicrobial use and Resistance and identify opportunities for improvement and Awareness. The CARA network aims to provide an open-access data infrastructure where data from GPs, hospitals and the community can be uploaded and compared in easy visualisations. To design the dashboard, she works closely with the Insight Centre for Data Analytics in Galway. She is also Irish lead in the European ValueDx consortium (value-dx.eu), which focuses its research on community patient care to trial treatments for infections and deliver innovative and cost effective diagnostics to reduce antibiotic use. Akke grew up in Antwerp, Belgium and moved to Ireland in 2005. Prior to joining the UCD, she was in the School of Medicine at the NUI Galway.
