TEACHING ACTIVITIES

Allen believes in research informed teaching with work-integrated cases that offer students the opportunity to interpret workplaces through the lens of theory whilst mindful of how empirical workplaces inform the development of academic theory. Allen’s teaching approach is founded on a belief in the value of creating collective learning experiences where learning occurs through mutual engagement, interaction and discussion. He relates this to the school of thought that learning occurs through processes of social construction. Allen’s classes act as holistic events, presenting the subject matter in union with its work practices, technical skills and terminology, aesthetics, ethics and cultural values of the professional context. He actively seeks industry engagement, inviting guests and speakers from industry to present and discuss the practical realities of participating in the workplace, working in teams and producing physical and digital products: software, systems, technology and designs for people that involves the very same people.
