“Strengthening Democracy Ahead of the 2024 EP Elections: Lessons Learned from the NORFACE “Governance” Programme”
    8 Jun 2023
A stakeholder workshop entitled “Strengthening Democracy ahead of the 2024 EP Elections :Lessons from the NORFACE GOVERNANCE Research Programme”, which took place on June 8, 2023 in Brussels. The workshop was co-organised by the Scientific Coordination Team and the research project EUINACTION. Both were part of the sixth NORFACE transnational programme on “Democratic governance in a turbulent age”, which consists of a total of 14 international research projects – all of which were represented at the workshop. NORFACE stands for “New Opportunities for Research Funding Agency Cooperation in Europe” and is a partnership of national research funding agencies in Europe dedicated to leading and developing opportunities for scientists in the area of social and behavioral sciences. In this stakeholder workshop, scholars from across Europe provided their insights on the future of democratic governance. The workshop acted also be a space of conversation between scholars and practitioners as to how to integrate these insights into their work. The workshop was organised into panels, touching upon four of the main problems the EU faces when elections are imminent: (1) the role of disinformation and media change, (2) challenges to citizen participation and representation, (3) fragmentation and political polarisation, and (4) the fundamentally changing role of institutions, such as the EU, today. Each panel had a mix of academic input and stakeholder roundtables.

The image of the European Union (EU) as a remote law-making machine is widespread. Quite often journalists and politicians deliberately depict ‘Brussels’ as bureaucratic, even undemocratic, bypassing its citizens. And many of us buy into that image. Nikoleta Yordanova, Anastasia Ershova and Aleksandra Khokhlova, three political scientists from Leiden University, offer a different perspective: ‘If you look closer, the European Union’s actions regularly align with the interests and preferences of us, Europeans.’ To be explored further on 16 June 2022 at the NWO Synergy ’22 conference in the Hague, where researchers, policy developers and interested citizens will convene to address the societal impact of research, activism in science and trust in and skepticism towards institutions.
