BIO
Andrew McCartan is a postdoctoral researcher and lecturer at University College Dublin in the School of Geography and the School of Computer Science. He is currently working on the 'Beyond Opposition' project researching social polarisation around gender, sexuality, and abortion in post-equality landscapes, and the 'Sense of Belonging' project developing an intersectional analysis into belongingness amongst Computing undergraduate students. He completed his PhD in Geography at University College Dublin in 2022 with a thesis titled 'Geographies of LGBTQ+ Activism: Ireland After Marriage Equality', supervised by Prof Kath Browne; his MA in Geography at Brock University, ON, Canada in 2017 with a thesis on the contested use of public space at LGBT pride events in Glasgow, supervised by Catherine Jean Nash; and his BSc in Geography at The University of Glasgow, UK in 2014 with a dissertation examining campaigns to dissuade travel to St Petersburg in response to anti-gay propaganda laws, supervised by Chris Philo. He has previously been a research assistant on the ‘Resisting Recognition’ project, researching contemporary heteroactivisms in response to gains in LGBT rights. He currently volunteers with LGBT Ireland, Shout Out, and Equality for Children.
