Dr Arthur Cater has been a lecturer (now Associate Professor) in UCD Dublin School of Computer Science (and precursors) since 1980. His BA was in the Computer Science Tripos at the University of Cambridge, his PhD titled "Analysis and Inference for English" (1982) was also at Cambridge in the Computer Laboratory. Research since then has mainly focused on NLP (Natural Language Processing), and most recently in Computer Go. He has been three times organiser of the Dublin Computational Linguistics Research Seminar series. He was a founder member of the Artificial Intelligence Association of Ireland, and has served as its Vice-Chair, Chair, and Treasurer. He was a founder member also of the Irish Research Scientists Association. He served as Director of the Localisation Resources Centre in UCD for its first three years.
