RESEARCH INTERESTS

Sport Injury surveillance in sport, identification of risk factors for injury, consequences of injury and preventative stratgies. Main work in Gaelic Games as co-director and principal investigator of GAA National Injury Surveillance Database. This is currently in its 10th year of data collection, monitoring and measuring injury incidence at inter-county Gaelic football and hurling. This project is funded by the GAA Medical and Scientific Committee. Collaborators include John C Murphy MISCP, Mr Ger Ryan, Mr Gearoid Devitt, Dr. Edwenia O' Malley, Mr. Mark Roe and Prof. Conor Gissane, St. Mary's Univeristy College, Twickenham. One of the key outputs of this project has been the development of the GAA15 a bespoke injury prevention training programme designed for community level adoption in the games. Evaluation of relationship between injury and training/matchplay load in sport Implementation research with GAA into adoption of GAA15 programme Analysis of speed and agility performance in Rugby Union and development of testing protocols, in collaboration with Dr. Brian Green, IRFU and Dr. Brian Caulfield, UCD. Investigation of coaching strategies in Gaelic football coaches based of a Self Determination Theory model, in collaboration with Dr. Edel Langan PhD candidate Dr. Chris Lonsdale, University of Western Sydney Sport participation in special populations - Haemophilia with Emma Sherlock MISCP, St. James' Hospital. Exercise testing and prescription for health RCT of exercise for reduction of cardiovascular risk in a cardiac rehabiliation paradigm in Stroke and TIA in collaboration with Olive Lennon, HRB Research Fellow, Dr. Catherine Doody, UCD and Dr. Dominic McCabe AMNCH. Other related topics are the validation and reliability testing of a clinical field test to estimate VO2 in patients with stroke. Examination of clinical outcomes in falls prevention and bone health programmes - Erin Smith PhD candidate Exploration of exercise and vibration therapy to improve bone density, biochemical markers and function in women with osteoporosis or osteopeonia. This is a health and exercise intervention for the student population at UCD which runs each semester, involving fitness testing, exercise prescritpion and motivational support. Exercise intervention for people with RA, taking TNFa medication.
