  • PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITY
    21 Jun 2024
The research-based collective For Just Mobilities (Dr. Krity Gera and Dr. Caterina Villani) believe it is important to include the knowledge produced by and with children when planning our city streets for a post-car future. This exhibition showcases the creative outputs from two workshops empowering children (ages 6-11) to express their vision for their neighbourhood streets. Children were engaged in participatory and playful activities through interactive sessions involving role play and creating models reflecting their ideas of their neighbourhood. Through this exhibition, we aim to raise public awareness of the potential of involving children in the design and planning activities of their neighbourhood. We also aim to engage the entire ecosystem that revolves around children, including parents, caregivers, peers, educators, and local organisations.
  • PUBLIC ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITY
    8 Jun 2024
Children use streets as an extension of their house to play with their friends, walk to school, accompany their parents for grocery trips, enjoy a walk with their pets and to spot bees and insects. Children see and experience things and environments differently. They are not bound by the rules which may act as a barrier towards creative imagination. It is important to hear their voices, what they have to say and experience. This workshop aims to engage children (6 - 11 yrs old) through interactive sessions to express their vision for the neighbourhood streets. It will allow the children to explore the things they wished were there to make the streets more playful, fun and accessible. This workshop will not only create awareness among children to be involved in community but also impacts the entire ecosystem that revolves around children, including parents, care-givers, their peers, educators and local communities. We intend to conduct an in-person interactive workshop (with role-play, drawing and model-making) with children accompanied by one parent/carer, making it an inclusive and playful family-oriented session.

Seminar by Ximena Ocampo Aguilar and Francisco Paille, co-founders of dérive LAB and street experiment pioneers from Mexico and Colombia. These urban design visionaries generously shared their groundbreaking participatory approaches and projects with our undergraduate students. They highlighted the need for participatory approaches attentive to local uses and understanding of public space. Witnessing the power of street experiments firsthand, TCPEP students were blown away by the transformative possibilities they offer for cities worldwide!
