I am full Professor of Molecular Medicine and Director of the UCD Diabetes Complications Research Centre. I teach Principles of Pharmacology and Molecular Biology of the Cell to undergraduuate and graduate entry medical students. I lead an international, multidisciplinary group of investigators including faculty, postdoctoral fellows, clinicians, clinical fellows, graduate students and undergraduates whose research focuses on innate immunity and chronic complications of diabetes. Our investigations on the molecular mechanisms underlying the initiation, progression and potential regression of diabetic kidney disease have identified several novel therapeutic targets, susceptibility genes and potential modulators of disease. Our recent progress towards understanding inflammatory processes in these contexts is particularly noteworthy. I have served on the board of The Health Research Board, Ireland; The European Medical Research Council and The Wellcome Trust Physiological Sciences Committee [2007-2010]. I served as Vice President Innovation at University College Dublin. I am a member of the editorial board of J Biol Chem and Mol Pharmacol I currently act as an adviser to the board of Bart’s Charity, London and on the executive of the European Diabetic Nephropathy Subgroup of the EASD. I was elected a member of the Royal Irish Academy in 2011 and Chair the RIA Life and Medical Sciences Committee [2014-2019]. In recognition of ‘outstanding research and leadership contributions’ I am to receive the Women in Science Award of The International Congress of Inflammation, Sydney Australia 2019.
