BIO

I am an Ad Astra Assistant Professor in Applied Mathematics and Meteorology. My background is mostly in Numerical Weather Prediction, with a brief spell in ocean modelling. I am the current President of the Irish Meteorological Society.

After a BSc in Mathematical Sciences in UCC, I completed a PhD in UCD in 2010, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in the Meteorological Research Division of Environment Canada. The focus of my research was stable time integration methods for atmospheric forecasting models. Returning to UCD in 2014, I worked on numerical and statistical modelling of extreme ocean waves, before joining Met Éireann in 2016 as a Meteorologist in their Research and Applications Division. There I worked on NWP operations and high-resolution model development, working as part of a number of European consortia and collaborations, including HIRLAM, ACCORD, and Destination Earth. In 2025, I once again returned to UCD.

My research interests cover various aspects of NWP: from developing numerical methods for solving differential equations in idealised models, to more operational aspects of high-resolution forecasting such as model performance and verification, and the use of data-driven machine learning methods.
