BIO

Colm carries out in multidisciplinary research that applies to the economic, environmental and ethical issues facing our society. He is an actuary and an economist. Actuaries are multidisciplinary professionals, with strong quantitative skills, who have a duty to put the public interest first.

He is particularly interested in education to improve society, through developing character in young people along with improving behaviour and culture in organisations. His website www.knowyourselftest.com makes his research more widely available for public use.

Before academia, he worked in financial markets. He held several senior positions, including Head of Quantitative Trading in Bank of Ireland Global Market. He considers that a sound understanding of financial markets is essential to looking after the wider public interest.

His most recent research involved estimating the returns and risks from forestry investment over the last 750 years. Planting trees is likely to play a big role in plans to tackle the big environmental challenges facing our society.

Colm is an active volunteer in the actuarial profession. Amongst other roles, he is the education representative of the Institute & Faculty of Actuaries on the Actuarial Association of Europe.
