I am an Environmental Scientist currently working as Assistant Professor in Occupational and Environmental Studies and the Programme Coordinator for the Masters on Occupational Safety and Health and the Programme Coordinator for the Professional Certificate in Environmental Management. I hold a degree in Environmental Science from TCD (1997 to 2001) and a PhD in Environmental Engineering from DCU (2001 to 2006).I have always been very interested in the natural world and human interactions with it ranging from global to micro scale. In particular I am interested in how the pollution humanity generates can interact with the public to our own detriment through various environmental pathways. In 1999 I travelled to Sulawesi in Indonesa as part of an expedition from TCD. While there I studied the pollution impacts to coral reefs utilised for fishing by the native bajau sea gypsy community.Prior to UCD I worked for five years in the private sector as a project environmental scientist working on a wide variety of national and regional construction and planning projects ranging from ports to airports, motorways to power plants, regional plans to environmental licensing. Through my work in the private sector, my interests in environmental science and my work in Health and Safety at UCD, I now have an active interest in the interactions between environmental pollution and public health. My main areas of scientific interest include occupational risk awareness, environmental risk assessment, public health impact assessment, environmental awareness and climate change education. I also have a significant research interest in teaching as an impactful mechanism of individual, organisational and societal change. My current research projects focus in particular on the impact education and training can have on behavioural change e.g. concussion training in athletes and climate change training for public health practitioners. Aside from my Programme Coordinator roles I also lecture and supervise research theses as part of the Masters in Occupational Safety and Health and as part of the TCD Masters in Development Practice (Adjunct Lecturer). I am also a member of the UCD Equality Diversity and Inclusion Group and Executive Committee representing the LGBTI Community on campus. I am currently an editor for Cogent Environmental Science Journal.
