BIO
I graduated with a BSc (1994) and PhD (1998) from the Queen's University Belfast. This was followed by postdoctoral research at Dalhousie University, NS, Canada and St Andrews University, Scotland. I was appointed as an Assistant Lecturer in Industrial Microbiology, University College Dublin (2001) and I am currently a Professor in the UCD School of Biomolecular and Biomedical Science. My research focuses on the biosynthesis/biotransformation of fluorinated compounds in microorganisms, the applications of biofilms in biocatalysis and biodegradation, and biosensors. I have supervised 22 PhD students to completion, published over 100 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters and acquired funding from SFI (Research Ireland), EI, IRC and the EU. I previously served as the Vice Principal for Research and Innovation in the College of Science (2011-2013) and was the academic director of the MSc programmes in Biotechnology from 2015-2023. I was appointed as Head of School in September 2023.
