RESEARCH INTERESTS
David contributes to the advancement of the automatic design of robot swarms, the development of collective-robotics platforms, and robotics education. His research uses optimization and machine-learning methods to automatically generate and evaluate control software for large groups of robots, focusing on communication, task sequencing, platform transfer, and learning from demonstrations. He has contributed to major European projects, including the ERC-funded DEMIURGE project and the EIC-funded EMERGE project. In EMERGE, he studied how collaborative awareness can emerge from minimal artificial entities, applying automatic design methods to create and test building units that generate collective behaviors. In DEMIURGE, he developed approaches for swarms to communicate, respond to events, and perform sequential tasks through automatic design methods. He has also contributed to building physical robots, experimental platforms, and laboratory infrastructure, including work with the Robot Operating System (ROS). In his work, has supported emerging swarm robotics labs in Latin America and promotes hands-on experimentation in swarm robotics.
David has contributed to the development of tools and platforms for swarm-robotics experiments, such as tracking systems, color-based communication arenas, and SLAM-related modules. In teaching, he delivers courses in mobile and swarm robotics, creates open educational material and remote lab infrastructure, and supervises master’s and bachelor’s students on topics ranging from modular swarm design and robot imitation learning to task allocation and hardware/software development for collective robotics.
