BIO

Dr David MacManus is an Associate Professor in the School of Mechanical & Materials Engineering at University College Dublin. David was awarded an ERC Starting Grant in 2024 to investigate the sex specific biomechanics of traumatic brain injury. David has a BA, BAI in Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering from Trinity College Dublin, and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from University College Dublin. During his PhD, David developed a state-of-the-art micro-indentation apparatus capable of applying up to 100/s strain rate and >35% strain to soft biological tissues. His PhD thesis was awarded the Broberg Medal for Best PhD Thesis in Mechanics at University College Dublin in 2017. In 2018, David was awarded a Science Foundation Ireland Industry Fellowship to investigate the biological mechanisms underlying insulin-induced injection-site lipohypertrophy. In 2019, David joined the School of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering at Dublin City University as an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering. In 2023, David re-joined the School of Mechanical & Materials Engineering at UCD as an Assistant Professor.

David is the BRAIN Lab (www.brain-lab.org) Principal Investigator at University College Dublin where his research focuses on unravelling the biomechanics of traumatic brain injury.
