Convent life gave opportunities to Irish women to get a good education, avoid ‘compulsory’ marriage and indeed the chance for ‘worldly’ adventures and travel. This is discussed by UCD Professor Deirdre Raftery, TCD Professor of Poetry, Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin and introduced by Nell Regan.

This was a public lecture at the dlr Lexicon library, Dun Laoghaire, attended by a large audience of people interested in social and cultural history. It drew on research on Irish women's lives, recounting how and why some became nuns and worked in education. The event was recorded as a podcast. Presented by Dr Catriona Delaney, and drawing on our collaborative work on UCD ConventCollections projects, the event was a way of communicating research to a public audience.
