BIO

Dr. Dimitrios Argyropoulos is an Assistant Professor in the UCD School of Biosystems and Food Engineering. He was born in Athens (Greece), completed his BSc studies in Biosystems Engineering (Agricultural Machinery & Irrigation) and moved to Stuttgart (Germany) for an MSc in Environmental Protection & Agricultural Food Production with a fellowship from the Greek State Scholarships Foundation (IKY). After obtaining his MSc, he joined the group of Agricultural Engineering in the Tropics and Subtropics, a leading group working on renewable energy supply systems and post-harvest technology. He holds a PhD in Agricultural Engineering (Postharvest Technology of Food and Bio-based Products) from the University of Hohenheim, being a member of the Association of German Engineers (Max Eyth Society for Agricultural Engineering). Prior to joining UCD, he has held the post of Scientific Coordinator in the Research Centre for Bioeconomy, a central inter-faculty research network of the University of Hohenheim, being responsible for the conception, coordination and implementation of EU-funded multi-actor projects (ICT-Agri-food, Mushroom Industry, Bioeconomy). The aim of his research is to develop a holistic, value chain approach specifically dealing with exigent problems faced by farmers on agricultural processing activities, value addition and waste valorisation. He recently led the EU Horizon 2020 SMARTCHAIN project on sustainable agri-food value chains with 43 partners across Europe. He was also Adjunct Lecturer at the Institute of Agricultural Engineering of the same University, being involved in the EIT Food's flagship Food System Master Programme, an integrated graduate degree programme organised by 10 academic institutions and industrial partners from across EIT Food’s pan-European partner network. He is the managing editor of the Elsevier Journal of Applied Research on Medicinal and Aromatic Plants. He is strongly involved in the Focus Groups of the agricultural European Innovation Partnership (EIP-AGRI), currently as the coordinating expert of the FG35 on Plant-based Medicinal and Cosmetic Products. He is a member of the newly established European Mushroom Working Group (EMushWG), in the advisory board of the EU Horizon 2020 DIVA project - Boosting innovative digitech value chains for agrofood, forestry & environment and he has previously participated as principal investigator in a wide range of H2020-funded projects including ERASMUS+, ICT-AGRI-2 ERA-NET, EIT-FOOD with industry and academic partners in Europe. His group at UCD is currently building its capacity to carry out state-of-the-art research in the area of agricultural process engineering with a special focus on model-based design of drying processes for specialty crops and biomaterials utilising tools from new digital technologies.
