BIO

Dr. Dimitrios Argyropoulos is an Assistant Professor in the UCD School of Biosystems and Food Engineering - Ireland’s premier agri-food related research entity and a Principal Investigator with the UCD Institute of Food and Health. He is the UCD Programme Director of the MSc Digital Technology for Sustainable Agriculture.

He leads the d-Lab: Digital Agriculture & Bioresource, a research funded group of 10 researchers with an excellent track record in delivering top-class research with focus on the application of "smart systems" to the agri-food and bio-resource sectors.

He was born in Athens (Greece), completed his bachelor's degree in Biosystems Engineering (Agricultural Machinery & Irrigation) and moved to Stuttgart (Germany) for an MSc in Environmental Protection & Agricultural Food Production with a fellowship from the Greek State Scholarships Foundation (IKY). After obtaining his MSc, he joined the group of Agricultural Engineering in the Tropics and Subtropics at the University of Hohenheim, a leading group working on renewable energy supply systems and post-harvest technology. He holds a PhD (Dr. sc. agr.), Dissertation in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Hohenheim, being a member of the Association of German Engineers (VDI’s Technical Division 'Max Eyth Society for Agricultural Engineering') thereafter.

Dr Argyropoulos is a highly experienced academic with proven solid project leadership experience at EU, national and industrial level. He has developed collaborative multi-disciplinary research programmes with industry and has led several national and EU funded international research consortia. He is Principal Investigator in more than 10 ongoing European projects on sustainable and digitised agri-food value chains (AGROBOOST, Watson, AGRINEXT, Farmtopia, GOOD, NanoCosmos, EU4Advice, Oenotrace, Mushnomics, SpectroFood, Foster-xR, DigiFarm).

Dr Argyropoulos led the €11 million Horizon Europe Watson project, an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary project of 47 partners across 20 countries addressing the application of digital and intelligence-based technologies on food authenticity and traceability across the supply chain.

He is leading the Horizon Europe AGROBOOST project aiming to transform the agricultural sector into a more attractive, sustainable and efficient industry by harnessing the power of advanced agro-robotics, augmented reality (AR), artificial intelligence (AI), automation and digitalisation.

He is a member of various European agri-food tech and engineering networks, societies and associations e.g., advisory board member of the H2020 DIVA project ‘Boosting innovative digitech value chains for agrofood, forestry and environment’; steering committee member of the IEEE Transactions on AgriFood Electronics (TAFE); associate editor of Elsevier Journal on Smart Agricultural Technology (SAT); associate editor of Elsevier Journal on Computers and Electronics in Agriculture (COMPAG); associate editor (Machinery Systems) of the American Society of Agricultural & Biological Engineers (ASABE).

The digital transformation of the mycelium and mushroom sector/industry forms a special research focus:
- Agroboost Coordinator and pilot leader on Mushroom Roboitc Harvesting;

- Agrinext pilot leader on Smart Mushroom Farming;

- Farmtopia pilot leader on Computer Vision in Oyster Mushroom Farming;
- Mushnomics pilot leader on AI Algorithms for crop growth monitoring;
- SpectroFood pilot leader on portable Hyperspectral Imaging Technologies for Mushroom Quality;
- Foster-xR: Detection and segmentation of mushrooms in natural environments.
