TEACHING ACTIVITIES
My dedication to teaching and education is best illustrated by my particular effort in the development of new innovations in teaching and learning. I am determined to maintain the enthusiasm of young people by nurturing their interest in science from an early stage in their education.
Innovation and Leadership:
Design of novel modules, a novel syllabus in Biophysics and Director of one of the first and highly successfully running, interdisciplinary MSc (taught master) offers in UCD including MSc programmes in Physics (negotiated F012/013) Nanophysics & Biophysics (NanoBio, T149/168), Nanotechnology (Nanotech, F122/123)), Computational Physics (negotiated F120/121) and Appl. Maths & Theoretical Physics (negotiated, F124/125).
I have been awarded with the UCD EMPS Teaching award 2008 in recognition of my commitment and new teaching approaches and additionally have developed and also presented science shows e.g. on the Young Scientist Exhibition for almost a decade.
Furthermore, I have consistently and consecutively received one of the best student feedbacks within the School of Physics. Within the framework of my internationally recognized Habilitation in Germany, my teaching performance was ranked by two extern and independent Professors and I received the highest recognition "excellent".
Teaching experience: Over the past 20 years, I have taught students of 5 different universities on three continents (Europe, Asia and America) in three different languages, including top universities such as UC Berkeley. I have designed modules for students of all levels including large beginner classes (first year up to 560 students in class), intermediate level (2nd & 3rd year with 25-80 students in class) and advanced level (4th year, MSc and PhD level including highly specialized classes with 6-12 students). I have also delivered lectures for scientific laymen for up to 1600 people (BT Arena) and also delivered lectures which have been filmed (TV) and/or recorded including a participation in an award winning science radio show.
Last but not least, I have successfully nurtured and supervised MSc (research) and a higher number (17-20) of PhD students to completion, forming an internationally recognized research group since my start in UCD in 2004.
