Donal's original research focus was in Chaos theory and led to the award of a PhD at the University Libre de Bruxelles, supported in part by a personal research fellowship from the European Commission. The focus then broadened to include non-adiabatic quantum dynamics while at the University of Roma "La Sapienza", and continued at the Centre Europeene de Calculs Atomiques et Nucleare ( which at that time was hosted at the Ecole Normale Superieure de Lyon, and later in Ireland both at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) and University College Dublin (UCD) . While in TCD the focus extended to include the simulation of advanced materials in the experimental group of Werner Blau. Donal moved to UCD initially to provide scientific support in a UCD led bid to host CECAM HQ in Ireland. The bid was ranked second in an international competition that includes some 14 participants across Europe - after which a CECAM node was established in Ireland hosted in UCD. Donal has remained in UCD since then, and his research focus has expanded to include biophysics and sensor development, led to two patent filings. Donal became director of the Irish CECAM node in 2014, and in late 2014, was as one of the key people involved in preparing a successful UCD led multi-nodal CECAM M€ 4.8 proposal to the European Union for a centre of excellence ( dedicated to facilitating the creation of HPC capable scientific software, training advanced software production, and collaboration with industry. As well as the above activities, he also develops software, supervises students in theoretical physics, and collaborates with experimental groups in molecular biology, and theory groups in quantum dynamics
