BIO

Douglas J. Veale is Director of Translational Research of the DAMC, Director of the (EULAR) European League Against Rheumatic disease Centre of Excellence for Arthritis and Rheumatic Disease (CARD)Professor of Medicine and Consultant Rheumatologist at St Vincent's University Hospital and a Principal Investigator at The Conway Institute for Biomedical and Biomolecular Research, University College Dublin (UCD). He is a Fellow of both the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland (1997) and the Royal College, London (1999). Professor Veale graduated from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1984 and obtained his MD by thesis from UCD in 1992.Professor Veale has established an international reputation in translational research in the areas of early inflammatory arthritis - rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis, scleroderma, biopharmaceutical therapies, biomarkers of disease and response to therapy. His scientific expertise focus is on synovial histopathology, cytokine biology and angiogenesis. He has established a EULAR centre of excellence with a broad research team including scientists, clinical research fellows, MD and PhD students funded by peer-reviewed grants from the European Union FP6 programme and FP7 Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI), The Health Research Board of Ireland, Science Foundation Ireland, the Programme for Research in Third Level Institutions, several of industry partnership programmes and The American Federation for Ageing Research.The Translational Research programme integrates immunology research across groups - rheumatology with colorectal, endocrine and hepatic in the ERC, the Conway Institute, UCD and TCD. Our primary clinical focus is on inflammatory arthritis and scientifically on hypoxia and metabolic alterations, cytokine biology and cellular immunity, and angiogenesis in inflammation. Professor Veale was elected and continues to serve on the Editorial Board of Annals of Rheumatic Disease (Impact Factor 12.38) and RMD Open, and the EULAR Scientific Committee. He is a section chair and lead an abstract selection committee for the American College of Rheumatology and EULAR. In 2017 Professor Veale was an invited grant reviewer for the NIH/NIAMS Washington, USA and he was appointed as the Chief Medical Officer for two new start up companies - Longboat and Health Beacon.
