RESEARCH INTERESTS
My major research interests are in perinatal health, nutrition, diabetes and obesity in pregnancy. We have developed an internationally competitive research programme in this area and currently have a number of randomised controlled trials on-going. PEARS is examining the impact of a lifestyle intervention with smart phone app support on rates of gestational diabetes in overweight and obese pregnancy. TEST is an RCT examining the role of aspirin in the prevention of pre-eclampsia and fetal growth restriction in low risk pregnancy. We are following to 10 years a cohort of mothers and their infants who were enrolled in pregnancy into a large randomised controlled trial of a low glycaemic index diet in pregnancy, the ROLO kids study. I am a co-PI in the HRB Health research Centre of Diet and Health Research and and a co PI in the HRB Mother & Baby Clinical Trials Network and member of a large research consortium in European funded through FP7 on early life nutrition. I hold many committee positions at the RCPI and at the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecology UK , have developed guidelines for pregnancy both in Ireland and in the UK and am an executive member of the Maternal Medicine Clinical Studies Group in the UK. Research interests Maternal nutrition in pregnancy, diabetic pregnancy Lifestyle interventions to improve pregnancy outcome Obstetrics, Maternal and Fetal Medicine Prenatal diagnosis and prenatal ultrasound Research funding obtained circa Euro 20 million over recent years.
