Dr Fionnuala Murphy is an Assistant Professor in the UCD School of Biosystems & Food Engineering, and is UCD Programme Director of the MSc Bioeconomy with Business, and Programme Coordinator of the MSc in Sustainable Energy and Green Technologies and ME in Biosystems & Food Engineering. Her research focuses on life cycle assessment modelling for the analysis of environmental impacts of a range of production systems, with a special interest in renewable energy systems. Dr Murphy's work aims to understand, quantify and analyse complex environmental exchanges resulting from renewable energy deployment across the full value chain. She is leading national and EU research in the development of the sustainable circular bioeconomy. Nationally, she is leading ‘ABC Economy’ to develop new sustainable value chains for the circular bioeconomy in Ireland by maximising value and minimising environmental impacts through cascading of biomass for production of biobased products and energy. On an EU level she is Coordinating the AgRefine ITN, a Marie Skłodowska-Curie 'education, training and skills development programme rolling out the next generation of Agri Biorefinery and Valorisation Bioeconomy leaders'. She is also a Principal Investigator on; BBI SpiralG 'Production of Phycocyanin from the Spirulina Arthrospira Sp. Revisiting the Sourcing, Extraction and Co-Valorization of the Whole Algae in the Frame of an Industrial Biorefinery Concept', and BBI AgriChemWhey ‘An integrated biorefinery for the conversion of dairy by-products to high value bio-based chemicals’. A key element of Dr. Murphy's work is to carry out industry relevant research, participate in effective and relevant knowledge transfer, and foster links between industry and academia. She recently completed an SFI Industry Fellowship with Trifol Resources.Ltd. assessing the environmental performance of novel end-of-life plastic valorisation technologies utilising state of the art consequential life cycle assessment methodologies.
