BIO
Irene is a medical imaging researcher interested in investigating objective methods for image quality assessment and developing anthropomorphic models (phantoms) as patient surrogates based on 3D printing. Such technologies allow us to evaluate the new technical developments in medical imaging systems in condicions closer to the clinic with patients. We need test objects that mimic the patients' anatomies, morphometry and disease stage. I also focus on Artificial Intelligence perception of diagnostic images. We are living a change in the anthropocentric way in which we acquire and reconstruct medical images with the arrival of AI applications for diagnosis to support and in some cases replace clinicians in some tasks. We need to optimize the imaging chain not only for human eyes for these "AI computer eyes". I am interested in X-ray imaging devices with a special focus on Computed Tomography, which is one of the most popular X-ray diagnostic modalities and the higher contributor to patient dose worldwide.
I have a transveral approach to research, collaborating with professionals in different fields such as radiologists and clinicians, engineers, X-ray technicians, medical physicists and computer scientists to tackle complex problems (and identify new ones) in Radiology.
