Workshop

The PhD School invited young scholars working on research questions relating to national and European parliaments to present a research paper and get feedback from peers and leading academics in the field of parliamentary research. We invited work addressing (but not limited to) questions of: • The impact of national and European parliamentary elections on parliamentary activities • The link between citizens and parliamentarians at the national and supranational levels • Parliamentary speeches and their content, including the application of quantitative and qualitative text-analysis techniques • Parliamentary voting behaviour • The communication strategies of parliamentary representatives through the media, and online through social media platforms • The role of parliamentary committees in policy-making processes • The evolving role of national parliaments in European and EU politics • The impact of formal and informal institutions on parliamentary decision- making processes The summer school was structured around morning presentations by leading scholars in the field of parliamentary politics, and was be followed with afternoon presentations from PhD participants. Our aim was to provide young scholars with networking opportunities with established experts in the field, and to get feedback on their research.

Workshop
13 Nov 2015
This interdisciplinary research workshop brings together a nascent network of scholars from politics and computer science interested in using data analysis techniques to examine the wealth of information relating to European and EU politics that is now available online. The project is divided into two strands relating to 1) how politics and policy making are conducted internally in governmental institutions, and 2) how this is then communicated to the public through services such as Twitter, Facebook and other online platforms. The research network uses cutting-edge methods developed in the fields of text mining, network analysis, and machine learning to provide a new perspective on European politics. Our aim is to survey the state-of-the-art in the field with an aim to identify areas for further research and collaboration.

RECORD OF IMPACT
EUandI 2014 Voter Advice Application
The EUandI 2014 Voter Advice Application helped citizens make informed choices in their 2014 European elections. The app matches users with political parties based on their responses to 30 policy statements. I was a member of Team Ireland, who were tasked with identifying the positions of the Irish parties on the 30 aforementioned policy statements.
RECORD OF IMPACT
euandi2019 is a Voting Advice Application built to help citizens make an informed choice in the 2019 European Parliament elections. Available in over 20 languages, it invites users to react to 22 statements covering a wide range of contemporary policy issues and political values in European politics. The results show which parties stand closest to citizens’ preferences, both in their country and all across Europe. I led the Irish contribution to this international project, and heavily involved Masters students in the development of the app.
