BIO
Jayne Carberry is a graduate of University College Dublin (Physiology) and was awarded her Ph.D. in 2011 for examining the effects of chronic hypoxia on respiratory muscle during early development (rodent models). In 2012, she took a post-doctoral position at Neuroscience Research Australia, Sydney, where she transitioned to sleep research in humans. She looked at the reflex control in the upper airway muscles in healthy individuals, in people with spinal cord injury and multiple sclerosis and people with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). She also extensively explored the phenotypic causes of OSA with a view to targeted therapy, including invasive neurophysiological studies, proof-of-concept studies, and clinical trials using hypnotics, antimuscarinic and noradrenergic agents. Subsequently, she moved to Adelaide Institute for Sleep Health (AISH), Flinders University, to help set-up a 6-bedroom sleep and breathing research facility. She continued with pharmacotherapy efficacy studies and clinical trials in OSA cohorts and is currently investigating mechanisms of how targeted upper airway muscle training may be beneficial for people with OSA. She returned to UCD in Jan 2021 to take a lecturing position in Physiology and to set up her own sleep research program; she holds an Honorary position at Flinders University, Adelaide.
