I see my teaching as part of a Socratic heritage that emphasizes that education is the drawing out of powers and potentialities for reasoning that are not so much transmitted by the educator as awakened in the learner and strengthened by reasoning and reflection. Innovation and Leadership I have shown leadership in graduate supervision in our School, with 5 PhDs supervised to completion, and 4 PhDs currently supervised (2019). I have also exhibited leadership in helping to develop new inter-College (e.g., Arts and Science) and Wider Community (e.g., medical practitioners and PhD students) courses. I also played important roles in the College of Human Sciences in the introduction of modularisation in UCD, and subsequently in the develop of hte new College of Social Sciences and Law.. I am currently co-Director of Teaching & Learning for the School of Philosophy and serve on the College Teaching & Learning Committee..
