BIO

Associate Professor Crean has been engaged in research in the general area of cell-matrix interactions since completing his PhD in 1998. In 2007 he was appointed to the Faculty of Science in University College Dublin as a tenure-track Lecturer in Pharmacology, was awarded tenure in 2009, promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2013 and appointed Associate Professor and Head of Pharmacology in 2015. During this time he has been in receipt of >€3,000,000 in funding from the Irish Health Research Board, Irish Research Council and Science Foundation Ireland among others and has established himself as a world-leading expert on CCN proteins and their role in renal injury and renal cell plasticity and published extensively in leading journals (>2250 citations, H index 2017 = 25). Professor Crean has supervised 10 PhD students to completion and is currently principal supervisor for 4 further PhD candidates and 2 M.Sc. students, comprising a research team embedded within the UCD Diabetes Complications Research Centre. His programme is supported by collaborations in critical areas such as epigenetics (Eileen Furlong, EMBL Heidelberg) mass spectrometry (Gerard Cagney, UCD), stem cell biology (Fiorella Altruda, Turin) and renal function (Derek Brazil, QUB; Roel Goldschmeding, Utrecht). The supervisors research team and collaborators have a wealth of experience in molecular and cellular biology, genomics, proteomics and models of disease.
