John Tuomey MArch FRIAI HonFRIBA HonFAIA was born in Tralee in 1954. John Tuomey graduated from the School of Architecture University College Dublin in 1976, gaining a masters' degree from UCD in 2004. He worked in London for Stirling Wilford Associates 1976-1981, on the design of the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart from design conception to construction. He worked in the Office of Public Works from 1981 to 1987, project architect for Laboratory at Abbotstown 1985 and Courthouse in Smithfield 1987, which formed part of an Urban Design project for the Smithfield area. In 1988 he set up O'Donnell + Tuomey with Sheila O'Donnell. President of the Architectural Association of Ireland 1992-1993. Inaugural Professor of Architectural Design UCD 2008. Elected to Aosdána 2011. Arnold W Brunner Prize, American Academy of Arts and Letters 2015.Sheila O'Donnell and John Tuomey jointly awarded RIBA Royal Gold Medal 2015, regarded as the world's most prestigious prize in Architecture. He was managing director of Group 91 Architects during the Temple Bar Development 1992-97 playing a key liaison role with TBP, DCC, Government agencies and various interest groups. O'Donnell +Tuomey's completed works include Irish Film Institute and National Photography Centre Temple Bar, Ranelagh School Dublin, Furniture College Letterfrack, CRID Laboratory UCD, Glucksman Gallery UCC, Irish Language Cultural Centre Derry, Timberyard Social Housing Dublin, Sean O'Casey Community Centre Dublin , Lyric Theatre Belfast, Photographers' Gallery London, Saw Swee Hock Student Centre LSE, Central European University Budapest and Student Hub UCC. They are currently working on the masterplan for Stratford Cultural District London, including new buildings for the V&A Museum and Sadler's Wells Dance Theatre, and the new Academic Hub Grangegorman Campus DIT
