BIO

I joined the School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice in 2016 as a Lecturer in Equality Studies. My academic qualifications are in Law and Social Policy and my main research interests lie in the area of childhood inequality and the government of childhood/government of child-adult relations. I am interested in the relationship between the government of childhood and broader questions related to power and inequality. My research to date has engaged with various areas of law and policy affecting children and families including child welfare and protection; education; children's rights and participation; refugee children and families. I have a particular interest in the application of governmentality theory to the critical examination of law and policy. My book The Government of Childhood: Discourse, Power and Inequality was published by PalgraveMacmillan in 2014. An audio-interview with Dr. Patrick Ryan discussing this book is available here http://shcyhome.org/2015/05/1827/ Follow me on twitter @mkarensmith1
