I joined the equality studies team in the School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice in 2016 having previously worked in Dublin Institute of Technology for a number of years. My academic qualifications are in law and social policy and my main research interests lie in the area of critical childhood studies and the government of childhood/government of child-adult relations. I am interested in the relationship between the government of childhood and broader questions related to power and inequality. My research to date has engaged with various areas of law and policy affecting children and families including child welfare and protection; education; youth justice; social protection; children's rights and participation. I have a particular interest in the application of governmentality theory to the critical examination of law and policy and in discourse theory and research. My book on the government of childhood in the Western world was published by PalgraveMacmillan in 2014. An audio-interview with Dr. Patrick Ryan discussing this book is available here Follow me on twitter @mkarensmith1
