This annual symposium is open to second year PhD and Masters students. The award is a cheque for EUR1,500 and is sponsored by BOC Gases Ireland. The symposium requires the student to present their postgraduate work to date and is judged on the quality of the research work, the quality of presentation of the work and prospects to publish the work in appropriate academic or professional journals.

Talk entitled, "New thermal control material systems for interplanetary and geosynchronous spaceflight." Kevin Doherty went on to represent Ireland in the World Finals.
