Dr Costello's teaching philosophy stresses the importance of constantly refreshing material; and a teaching technique which (a) is sensitive to the audience, (b) contextualizes legal doctrine, and (iii) frames each lecture by reference to an over-arching question. Dr Costello's teaching usually includes a writing and research component. His teaching innovations include the design of ten modules, and the introduction of seminars at Stage 4 level. In 2014 he was one of the two UCD awardees of the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning Teaching Heroes Award and a university Teaching Excellence Award in 2024.
