BIO
I am an Associate Professor and Programme Director for the BCL degrees in the School of Law, UCD. I completed my undergraduate BCL (International) degree and PhD in University College Cork (NUI). I teach on a range of undergraduate and graduate modules, broadly encompassing refugee and migration law, welfare and housing law, legal systems and human rights in UCD. I was the inaugural Director of Clinical Legal Education (2012-2015) in UCD School of Law. As Widening Participation Officer (2015-2017), I established a FET (formerly FETAC) route into UCD law degrees. I research and publish in leading journals and with academic presses on legal systems, human rights, social security law, children's rights and refugee law. I have conducted conducted tendered research for a variety of organisations within my specialisms. Prior to joining UCD in 2012, I was a lecturer in Ulster University (2009-2012), and Research and Policy Officer in the (then) Irish Human Rights Commission (2008-2009). More information on my research interests can be found at www.liamthornton.ie.
I welcome PhD proposals from candidates in fields of human rights law, asylum and refugee law, social welfare and social security law and housing law. Please email me if you wish to discuss your proposed PhD project.
