BIO
Marcus Donaghy is an architect in private practice and teaches design studio in the School Architecture in UCD. He graduated in Architecture from UCD in 1993 and later received an MArch from UCD. As an undergraduate he worked with O'Donnell and Tuomey Architects and Group 91 and also in Berlin. Upon graduation from UCD he worked in New York as a graduate architect and carpenter from 1993-1997 and on return to Dublin he worked with Paul Keogh Architects . In 2001 he established Donaghy and Dimond Architects with Will Dimond. The practice has an established record in sustainable design and the craft of place making, and has won numerous awards for its building projects. The work has been published internationally and exhibited in Ireland, Europe and the USA, and the practice has lectured widely, most recently in 2024 at the Société Française des Architectes in Paris. Recent exhibitions include the Ireland Expo in Dubai 2022, Irish Embassies Baltic States in Riga 2022 and the Royal Academy in London in 2021. In 2016 Donaghy and Dimond won the AAI Downes Medal for the Model School project in Inchicore, Dublin, and this project was also shortlisted for the EU Mies Awards 2017 and exhibited in the 40 Best Works of Architecture exhibition in Barcelona and other European cities. The practice participated in Close Encounters at the 2018 Venice Biennale of Architecture, an exhibition involving critical interpretation of seminal works of architecture from around the world. The exhibition was curated by Grafton Architects under the banner FreeSpace, and was exhibited subsequently in the Glucksman Gallery, Cork and Visual in Carlow. In 2012 the practice was shortlisted for the BSI Swiss Architectural Award and the work exhibited in Mendrisio and the Querini Stampalia in Venice. Recent work includes a collaborative design project for a secondary school in County Meath, and various private domestic projects. Marcus has taught architecture at UCD since 2000 and has coordinated studio modules at both undergraduate and graduate level. He ran a thesis research group for several years under the theme of Ecology. Marcus was a member a teaching team for Open Heart Studio which won a University Award for Outstanding Contribution to Student Learning in 2021. He currently coordinates a core Design Studio Module at masters level and also convenes a Design Research Studio focussed on Material Embodiment and Resources. He has been an External Examiner at Newcastle University and at University of Nottingham, and has been a visiting critic at schools of architecture including Queens University, Cork Institute of Technology, Technical University Dublin, University of Limerick, the Welsh School of Architecture in Cardiff and CESUGA in La Coruna.
