BIO
I joined the Department of English, UCD in 1992 and was appointed College Lecturer in 1994. At undergraduate level, my teaching has focused on race/ethnicity and gender, and courses have included Nineteenth-Century American Literature, American Modernism, African American Writing and Crime Fiction. I have supervised MA theses on a diverse range of topics, and PhD theses on Native American and African American Writing.
Present research is in the field of Dysfluency Studies (an interdisciplinary field exploring cultural representation, therapeutic practice and embodied experience in relation to stammering/dysfluency). My research focuses on literary and cultural representations of dysfluency, with particular focus on rewriting the cultural narratives around stammering. In 2018 I organised an interdisciplinary conference on dysfluency at UCD and was PI for the subsequent Wellcome-funded research project, 'Metaphoric Stammers and Embodied Speakers: connecting clinical, cultural and creative practice in the area of dysfluent speech.' This generated The Stammering Collective (www.thestammeringcollective.org). I'm presently Co-Director of an international dysfluency project, Stuttering Commons led by the University of Alberta, and funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
Administrative roles have included Head of First Year, convenor for International Students and (presently): Stage 2 Convenor, School Officer for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and member of College of Arts and Humanities EDI Committee, and Co-lead of College of Arts and Humanities Research Strand Health, Medicine, and Wellbeing.
