TEACHING ACTIVITIES

I am Programme Director for the MSc in Leadership, Innovation and Management for Healthcare and related pathway programmes in leadership, strategy, innovation and management in health systems.

I co-ordinate and teach modules in Leadership, Innovation and Management Principles for Practice; Strategic Leadership for Healthcare; and Innovations in Healthcare: Local and Global.

All my modules are delivered through blended learning, entailing full-day applied and experiential workshops with an emphasis on student engagement and participation, and on assessment for and as learning.

My educational and teaching philosophy is grounded in social realism and the disciplinary knowledge required for professional scholarship. Knowledge first and then the identification of the principles that govern its production, transmission and acquisition to ensure that the curriculum is designed to facilitate cumulative and integrative learning.

I have had three major leadership roles in teaching and learning in UCD: School Head of Teaching and Learning (2007-2010); UCD Fellow in Teaching and Academic Development (2009-2011); Head of School and Dean of Nursing (2010-2016). All these roles have provided considerable scope for innovation in the areas of enhancement of teaching and learning, curriculum development, assessment re-design, student engagement, critical thinking, graduate attributes, graduate teaching assistant training and disciplinary knowledge development in professional practice disciplines.
