BIO

Dr. Michela Bertolotto received a BSc (1993) and a PhD degree in Computer Science (1998) from the University of Genova (Italy). Subsequently she worked at the National Center for Geographic Information and Analysis (NCGIA) and the Department of Spatial Information Science and Engineering of the University of Maine as a postdoctoral research associate. She joined UCD in September 2000. Her main research interests include spatio-temporal data modelling and mining, mobile and web-based GIS, map personalisation, open and crowd-sourced spatial data. Dr. Bertolotto is leading a research group including 3 postgraduate students and one postdoctoral researcher. She has supervised to completion 10 MSc and 16 PhD students. Several of her former PhD students have secured postdoctoral academic positions in Ireland, Italy, New Zealand, Canada, USA, Brazil, Pakistan and the UK, as well as the EU and NATO. She has acted as external examiner for PhD theses in Italy, Spain, Brazil, France, and Denmark. She has published over 100 scientific papers in prestigious journals and conferences in Geographic Information Science (GIScience) and related disciplines, and has been in the Program Committee of all major international GIScience events. She has chaired 6 international events and co-edited 8 volumes. She has been an invited speaker in several international institutions including ETH (Switzerland) and Rutgers University (USA). She is an editorial board member of the Journal of Spatial Information Science (open access) and of the International Journal of Geographical Information Science (Taylor and Francis); a regular reviewer for several major journals in GIScience including GeoInformatica (Springer), ISPRS Journal of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, IEEE Transactions on Geosciences and Remote Sensing, and Photogrammetric Engineering & Remote Sensing.
