RESEARCH INTERESTS

Her research centres on the life and work of William H. Whyte Jr. (1917–1999), examined as both biography and intellectual history, and positions him as an urban thinker who transformed how cities are understood through close attention to street life. It focuses on his insistence on looking, documenting, and testing assumptions, showing how he challenged abstract planning by grounding it in the realities of everyday use. His idea that small spatial changes can generate wider patterns of activity provides a critical lens for understanding why some public spaces work while others fail.

Her work extends to contemporary urban change, particularly in Irish cities, where careful observation is treated not only as a method of analysis but as a necessary discipline for shaping better urban environments, as reflected in initiatives such as Green Pearse Street.
