Dr Monica Gorman is a lecturer in agricultural extension and innovation in UCD’s School of Agriculture and Food Science. She has developed and coordinates postgraduate Masters programmes for agricultural science graduates who want to work in farm advisory and agricultural education roles. These include a postgraduate research programme in agricultural innovation support which is run in collaboration with Teagasc and other actors in the Ireland's agricultural knowledge and innovation system. She also coordinates taught postgraduate programmes (distance and on-campus) in agricultural extension and innovation. She was awarded College and University Awards for Excellence in Teaching in 2017/18. Monica grew up on a small farm in Co. Wicklow and after completing her BAgrSc and MAgrSc in UCD, she went to Sudan with Concern working with semi-nomadic pastoralists on the border with Eritrea and from there to Tanzania where she worked first with Irish Aid and then IUCN on community development in agriculture and natural resource management. She returned to Ireland and UCD and completed a PhD on multifunctional agriculture and the prospects for expanding livelihood opportunities for farm families in 2004. The next decade was spent working on international development and in 2013 Monica returned again to UCD and her current role where she is bringing her diverse experiences to bear in strengthening the attention to the social sciences in a school with a dominant natural science perspective and focus.
