BIO

I qualified from RCSI in 1991 and worked in Dublin before moving to London in 1994. I did both clinical and research work in the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery at Queen Square among other hospitals in London and then moved to the Pitie Salpetriere Hospital in Paris for a year. I then moved to the Royal Melbourne Hospital as a consultant before returning to St Vincent's in 2004.The Department of Neurology at St Vincent's University Hospital has significantly expanded in recent years and we are now running an extensive research program in multiple sclerosis (MS) and dystonia. The Department sees over 12,000 patients annually, runs three public clinics daily and over 2000 patients are treated as Day Cases. We also have seen a huge increase in neurology in-patient consults (over 2000 per year). The Department runs specialist clinics in multiple sclerosis, dystonia and Parkinson's disease. We also supervise a GP led Migraine Clinic. We have published extensively in the last 10-15 years and are currently involved in more than 10 clinical trials in MS. We encourage student involvement and run neurology teaching weeks twice a year for all UCD medical students. These have been very successful and audited every time to monitor changing needs. We have produced a series of neurology teaching videos which went live via YouTube and to date the videos have been visited over 1 million times and accessed from over 300 countries throughout the world.
