BIO

Niamh Brennan is Michael MacCormac Professor of Management at University College Dublin. A first class honours, first place in class, UCD Science (Microbiology & Biochemistry) graduate, Prof Niamh Brennan qualified as a chartered accountant with KPMG, holds a PhD from the University of Warwick and is a Chartered Director of the Institute of Directors (London). She is an Inaugural Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Directors in Ireland and an Honorary Fellow of the Society of Actuaries in Ireland. With 100+ publications, Niamh has a h-index of 24 (measures scientific productivity based on published articles and citations) reflecting 3,500+ Google Scholar citations. One of her papers received the British Accounting Review Best Paper Award 2010; another Accounting Auditing & Accountability Journal's (AAAJ) Mary Parker Follett Best Manuscript Award 2011; another a Mary Parker Follett 'highly commended' manuscript award 2014; Two of her papers are among AAAJ's 24 outstanding articles of the last 25 years; while her article, Can Directors Rely on Experts?, received the Accountancy Ireland Award 2011. Niamh is associate editor of Accounting, Auditing & Accountability Journal, Accounting Forum and the British Accounting Review. She has received three best-reviewer awards. In a survey of alumni, Niamh was voted one of UCD's top three lecturers for the 2000s onwards. She has served as Head of Accounting and Associate Dean for Research at the UCD School of Business. Niamh has also held visiting positions at the University of Sydney, the University of South Australia, the University of Canterbury at Christchurch New Zealand, the University of Otago New Zealand, Queensland University of Technology, the Rotman School of Management University of Toronto, Swinburne University of Technology Melbourne, the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University and Auckland University of Technology. Having established the UCD Centre for Corporate Governance in 2002, Niamh plays a leading role in the public discourse in Ireland and internationally on corporate governance. The Centre has provided executive and professional training to thousands of Irish company directors. Former chairman of the National College of Art and Design and the Dublin Docklands Development Authority, Niamh holds/has held non-executive directorships with the Children's Hospital Group, the Health Service Executive, Ulster Bank, Co-operation Ireland, Coillte (Irish state forestry company) and Lifetime Assurance (Bank of Ireland's life assurance subsidiary). She serves/has served on the audit committee of An Garda Siochana (Irish police force), Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council, the Department of Agriculture and Food and is former chairman and member of the UCD Audit Committee. Appointed by the Minister for Finance, she chaired the Commission on Financial Management and Control Systems in the Health Services. Appointed by the Minister for Trade Enterprise and Employment, she was vice-chairman of the Review Group on Auditing. Niamh has also completed financial reporting, forensic accounting and corporate governance consulting assignments for some of Ireland's leading organisations and has served as expert witness in cases involving financial reporting, forensic accounting and corporate governance issues. She is a regular TV, radio and newspaper contributor.
