ProfessorPatrick Shannon

Pat Shannon joined the academic staff of UCD in 1983 having worked at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, the Geological Survey of Ireland and the Petroleum Affairs Division of the Department of Energy. His was Head of the School of Geological Sciences (and previously the Department of Geology) from 1999 until September 2007. He set up the Marine and Petroleum Geology Research Group and is involved in various aspects of research from basin analysis and petroleum exploration to Neogene sedimentology. He held the Chair of Geology until his retirement from the academic staff of UCD in 2014, and is now Emeritus Professor of Geology. He was a member of the Senate of the National University of Ireland (2007-2017) and a member of the Governing Authority of UCD (2006-2014). Pat was Chairman of the Irish Offshore Operators' Association (2014-2019) and Secretary of the Royal Irish Academy (2017-2021).
