RESEARCH INTERESTS
From my time working in the research pharmaceutical and technology sectors (over 17 years) I have identified a new generation of challenges to be solved - technology development for reaction access/enabling across multiple phases, platforms for alternative reaction media, personalised medicine and patient well being/compliance.
To address these issues my research is focused in four main stands
- Multiphasic chemistry
- Chemical alternatives – biomass derived solvents
- Medicine on demand
- Drug delivery
Within these strands, I have developed a platform solution of targeted research that is interdisciplinary, aligned and adaptable so that impactful research solutions can be found.
1. Enabling multiphasic chemistry in both batch and flow:
- Development of robust, scalable methodologies for multiphasic synthesis.
- Chemistry to purification and isolation – linking controlled unit operations together in a fully integrated continuous process.
- Micro and meso- scale platforms for interrogation of multiphasic continuous processes for rapid and automated process design while ensuring robust scale-up.
2. Reaction technology:
- Developing new continuous hydrogenation (solid-liquid-gas) platforms.
- New small modular reactor designs that improve the mixing and mass transfer performance and facilitate safe scale-up for efficient manufacturing.
- Development of novel catalyst technologies that use monolithic polymer beds as catalysts.
- Enabling controlled continuous exothermic (fast) reaction systems - developing new interrogation strategies for fast exothermic chemistry – insilico DOE, kinetic models and evaluation of reactor types.
3. Green Processes:
- Using new biomass derived solvents in chemical processes – new process windows and reaction outcomes.
- Alternative/non-thermal reaction activation pathways
- Investigating the use of pressurised hot water extraction for continuous purification of valuable natural products.
- Developing green hydrogenation processes for the synthesis of chemical building blocks
- Sustainable pharmaceutical synthesis
- Novel technology; 3D printing and disposable/modular low cost, high performance manufacturing technologies for high potency, low volume products in pharma and food industries.
4. Medicine Efficacy and patient compliance – advanced manufacturing and delivery of medicines:
- Digital medicine, tuneable dosage forms and complex geometry for controlled drug release (4D printing)
- Combination drugs characterisation of 3D printed medicines.
- Developing drug delivery methods giving favourable pharmacokinetics but lead to greater patient compliance in use.
I am seeking academic and industrial partners for active collaboration and joint research, please do not hesitate to contact me to discuss participation in joint research programs. Please see my research profile for more information on my research goals and interests.
Interested students and postdoctoral scholars are encouraged to contact me via email to discuss potential funding applications via IRC, SFI, DAAD, DFG, AvH, H2020, CSC and other schemes.
