BIO
Ronan is an Associate Professor of Small Animal Surgery at University College Dublin (UCD) and a consultant small animal surgeon at UCD Veterinary Hospital. He is a Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (DECVS).
His clinical interests encompass all aspects of small animal surgery, with a particular focus on spinal surgery. His current research centres on spinal fixation, surgical innovation, and the evaluation of techniques and technologies designed to improve the safety and accuracy of spinal surgery in companion animals. These include patient-specific 3D-printed drill guides, pedicle-probing methods and intraosseous endoscopy for vertebral implant placement.
Ronan has published widely across soft-tissue, orthopaedic and spinal surgery. He is internationally recognised for his work on postattenuation neurological signs (PANS) in dogs and cats, epiglottic retroversion in dogs, and the evaluation of methods to improve the safety and accuracy of vertebral implant placement in both species.
He is actively involved in undergraduate veterinary education, the training and mentoring of ECVS surgical residents, and the supervision of postgraduate research students. He also regularly delivers continuing professional development courses, practical workshops and invited lectures to veterinary surgeons throughout Ireland, the United Kingdom and Europe.
Through his clinical, research and educational roles, Ronan is committed to advancing evidence-based surgery, fostering surgical innovation and supporting the development of the next generation of veterinary professionals. He was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (FRCVS) in August 2026 in recognition of his meritorious contributions to the veterinary profession.
