ProfessorRonan O’Connell

P. Ronan O'Connell is Emeritus Professor of Surgery University College Dublin, past President of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (2020-2022) and past-President of the European Surgical Association (2021-2022). He is past President and Honorary Member of the European Society of Coloproctology. He is a past Secretary of the BJS Society and Vice President of the James' IV Society of Surgeons. He has served as editor of the British Journal of Surgery, Associate Editor and Editor in Chief for the European Surgical Association, Associate Editor of Diseases of the Colon and Rectum and is an Editorial Board member of the Journal of the American College of Surgeons.
Prof O'Connell is widely published in the areas of IBD, colorectal cancer and pelvic floor physiology. He is Editor in Chief of Bailey and Love's Short Practice of Surgery (28th and 29th editions), editor of Operative Surgery of the Colon Rectum and Anus (6th edition) and joint editor of the European Manual in Coloproctology (1st and 2nd editions).
Professor O'Connell has received honorary fellowships from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow (2002), the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (2014) the Royal College of Surgeons of England (2019), the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong (2019), the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (2023) and the American College of Surgeons (2024). He is an Honorary Fellow of the American Surgical Association and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. He was the Hunterian Orator in RCS England 2019-2020 and the Primi Gimbernat Lecturer in 2022. He is the Wilson TS Wang Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (2024-2025). He is a member of the Research Advisory Board of Gothenburg University since 2020. He is a member a Council Member of the Medical Council of Ireland.
