BIO
Shane O'Hanlon is a Consultant Geriatrician at Mater Private Network (Eccles St and Cherrywood) and Clinical Professor in the School of Medicine at UCD. He is a recognised international expert in geriatric medicine, with subspecialty interests in geriatric oncology, perioperative medicine and rehabilitation. Shane was elected Honorary Deputy Secretary of the British Geriatrics Society in 2015 then served as Honorary Secretary until 2018.
Shane began his career in UCD as a medical student in 1995. Having completed basic training at St Vincent's University Hospital, he completed a national training scheme in Geriatric Medicine, working in 10 hospitals around Ireland. He completed a fellowship in Medical Education at the University of Limerick before undertaking further training in perioperative medicine at King's College Hospital London. He was appointed consultant in 2014 at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, and returned to St Vincent's in 2017. He lead the orthogeriatric service and was also NDTP Training Lead for the Ireland East Health Group and lead for undergraduate teaching in geriatric medicine at St Vincent's. He took up a post at the Mater Private Network in 2024.
Shane has been an invited speaker at every Royal College of Physicians in the UK & Ireland as well as the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland. He is a faculty member on the SIOG Advanced Course in Geriatric Oncology and the ESMO Symposium in Geriatric Oncology. He regularly contributes to and organises international conferences and is a panel member of the EAU Prostate Cancer Guidelines. He is the Irish representative on the Full Board of the EuGMS.
Publications: over 100 peer reviewed papers, book chapters and abstracts, contributor to Oxford Textbook of Geriatric Medicine & Brocklehurst's Textbook, editor of A Comprehensive Guide to Rehabilitation of the Older Patient 4th edition, editor of the charity anthology of poetry and prose "Emergence: a celebration of the wisdom and resilience of ageing". His poetry has been published in JAMA and the American Journal of Nursing.
Research: PI for UCD on the Horizon 2020 funded (5.9 million euros) GerOnTe project to develop new care pathways for older people with cancer; received 210k from Slaintecare for the award winning Emergency Department in the Home (EDITH) project; Associate Editor for Age & Ageing journal & BMC Geriatric Medicine, peer review for over 30 journals.
At UCD, Shane teaches medical students on the wards and provides regular tutorials on geriatric medicine and legal medicine. He has lectured on several modules for medical and science students, provided onsite teaching at the Royal Hospital Donnybrook and St Mary's Hospital and contributed to the MSc courses in Health Informatics and Chronic Disease.
