BIO

IRC Postdoctoral Research Fellow working on a project entitled 'Socialist Space and Modernism in East German Literature and Visual Culture'. My project argues that ‘socialist space’ is a major category of GDR fictional culture at the intersection of architecture, literature and visual culture. It demonstrates how post-war modernist architecture and urban planning used international modernism to create a communist society, and reveals how this provoked a critical counter-reflection in literature and film. Ultimately, it argues that the concept of ‘socialist space’ uncovers the dichotomy between an idealised space for utopian political and personal opportunities, and criticism of the underwhelming architectural and societal status quo. In doing so, it will make a major interdisciplinary contribution to German and Film Studies, and eventually can be developed into an international Modern Languages Research Cluster gathering cultural responses to modernist architecture from the five continents. Before crossing the Irish Sea, I was a teaching fellow in German at Durham University and postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Modern Language Research (IMLR) at the University of London. My PhD project at the University of Bristol dealt with the reception of German early 19th Century author Heinrich von Kleist in literature and theatre of the German Democratic Republic (GDR).
