BIO

Stephen J. Gardiner joined UCD in 1984, and was appointed in 2001 to the original Professorship of Mathematics, the eighth holder of this chair since the foundation of the university in 1854. In 1995 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Science by Queen's University on the basis of published research, and in 2000 he was elected a Member of the Royal Irish Academy, the highest academic honour in Ireland. He has served as Associate Dean in the Faculty of Arts (1996-2002), as Head of the Department of Mathematics (2002-2005) and as School Head of Finance and Staffing (2007-2020). He has also held the office of Treasurer of the Royal Irish Academy (2018-2021). His 60th birthday was marked by an International Conference on Complex Analysis, Potential Theory and Applications held at UCD from 11-15 June 2018. A special issue of the journal Analysis and Mathematical Physics was subsequently published in his honour in June 2019, and included a survey entitled "Potential theory and approximation: highlights from the scientific work of Stephen Gardiner".
