BIO

Dr Suja Somanadhan is the Director of BSc Nursing (Children's and General) Registration Programme and Assistant professor in Children’s Nursing at the UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery & Health Systems. She obtained a PhD, Graduate Diploma in Healthcare (Risk &Quality), Graduate Certificate (Nurse Education), MSc Nursing (Clinical Practice), Higher Diploma (Children's Nursing) from the University College Dublin (UCD). She is a registered children's nurse (RCN), registered general nurse (RGN) and registered nurse tutor (RNT) with a clinical background in Research & Audit, Metabolic Disorders, Endocrine Disorders, General Paediatrics, and Neonatology. Most recent appointments include Higher Education Institutions representative at the Rare Disease Taskforce Ireland, Executive member at the UCD CHilD Research Centre and Advisory Committee member at the Children’s Research Network Ireland and Northern Ireland. She is currently holding an honorary research associate fellowship with the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery, Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland and a clinical research associate with CHI at Temple Street Hospital. Dr Somanadhan is a recipient of a Fulbright Scholar health impact award 2019-2020, she will take up a research and teaching role at the University of Pittsburgh, Center for Rare Disease Therapy at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh, and a placement at the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from April-July 2020. Currently, Dr Somanadhan has a number of research grants and leading out on projects related to child and family’s health and well-being, which include Rare Diseases, Complex Care needs, Chronic Illness, Genetic Disorders, Life-limiting illness and Evidence-based care. More recently, leading out on the Health Research Board (HRB) funded Rare Disease Research Partnership (RAinDRoP), and Temple Street Foundation-funded project called SAMPI: Giving voice to the children and their families with Rare Diseases through Sand Play, Arts Therapy, Music Therapy, Photovoice and Interviews to answer a simple research question "what is it like for a child to live with a rare disease and how can children be best supported to express this?". Dr Somanadhan has extensive working experience and passion towards Patient Public Involvement (PPI) and service user engagement in health care to inform policy and practice, with a focus on Evidence-Based Health Care, Quality & Patient Safety and holds vast expertise utilising clinical audit as a tool for Quality Improvement in the clinical settings. Currently, serving as a member of the Children’s Health Ireland cross-hospital research committee and serve as an academic chair of the UCD-OLCHC Nursing Research network. She is a reviewer of a number of high impact journals includes Orphanet Journal of Rare Diseases, Child: Care, Health and Development, European Journal of Cancer Care, The International Journal of Health Care Quality Assurance (IJHCQA).
