BIO

I am currently working as an Assistant Professor in Children's Nursing at the UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery & Health Systems. I obtained my PhD, MSc (Clinical Practice), Higher Diploma in Children's Nursing and Graduate Certificate in Nurse Education from University College Dublin (UCD). I am a Registered Children's Nurse (RCN), Registered General Nurse (RGN) and Registered Nurse Tutor (RNT). I hold an honorary research associate fellowship with the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery, Royal College of Surgeons, Ireland. My clinical background is children's nursing; I have 18 years of clinical experience in paediatric health care settings working as a Staff Nurse, Clinical Nurse Manager, and Clinical Nurse Specialist and most recently (February 2013-April 2017) I was appointed as Clinical Audit and Nursing Research Facilitator at Temple Street Children's University Hospital. As a clinical audit facilitator, I played a significant role in setting up the Department of Clinical Audit which was launched in June 2013. I have managed and co-ordinated the day to day operation of the Department of Clinical Audit where I developed clinical audit policies and other relevant documents for the day to day governance of the Department of Clinical audit, which was reviewed, approved, ratified by Clinical Audit Steering Committee and CEO. As a nursing research facilitator, I supported the Department of Nursing in maximising its research competitiveness through education and support of staff using Research & Audit in a clinical setting. I have contributed to the design of the nursing research strategic plan for the hospital. I was Involved in many patient quality and safety projects (PEWS, Sepsis, Consent, Clinical Handover etc.) and some International research studies including Evaluating processes of care and outcomes of children in hospital (EPOCH). I was awarded my PhD in 2016 for undertaking qualitative research inquiry to understand parents experience of living with and caring for children with Mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS), a rare genetic life-limiting conditions. I have been awarded the best Rare Disease research presentation from the Irish Paediatric and American Society of Paediatrics in September 2016. I was the recipient of HSE Open Access Research Award (Health and wellbeing) category in September 2016 and CJ Coleman research award from the Irish Nursing and Midwifery Organisation (INMO) Ireland, in May 2016. I have also received special recognition from Temple Street Children’s University Hospital as the first Nurse to Complete a Doctoral Degree since 1870 in the Temple Street Hospital. Currently, I have a number of research grants and leading out on projects related to child and family’s health and wellbeing, which include rare genetic disorders, Head Safety Interventions, and evidence-based care. Now, I serve as an academic committee member at the Rare Disease Taskforce in Ireland, leading out on HRB Funded Rare Disease Research Partnership (RAinDRoP). I have extensive working experience and passion towards service user engagement in health care to inform policy and practice, with a focus on Evidence-Based Health Care, Quality & Patient Safety and holds vast expertise utilising clinical audit as a tool for Quality Improvement in the clinical settings. Currently, serving as the chair of the National Clinical Audit Network Forum (ICAN), working group member on the cross-hospital research committee for all three Dublin paediatric hospitals and also serve as an academic chair of the UCD-OLCHC Nursing Research network. I am a reviewer of a number of high impact journals include Orphanet Journal of Rare Diseases, Child: Care, Health and Development, European Journal of Cancer Care, The International Journal of Health Care Quality Assurance (IJHCQA). I have extensive teaching experience in both undergraduate and graduate nursing and intra-professionals' students. I have been nominated as one of the Teaching and Learning Award nominees in the UCD College of Health and Agricultural Sciences in 2018.
